Geriatric counseling services are provided primarily by social services professionals including licensed social workers rather that psychiatrists or other medical personnel.

Geriatric Counseling

Programs that utilize a variety of means to evaluate the mental or emotional status or functioning of people who may be experiencing acute or chronic disturbances. Diagnostic techniques may include observation of the person's behavior, interviews with the individual and significant others, psychological testing as indicated, medical examination, assessment for psychotropic or other medication, and the formulation of an appropriate, ongoing treatment plan which may include voluntary or involuntary hospitalization.

Clinical Psychiatric Evaluation

Programs that specialize in the treatment of children from infancy to age 12 who have adjustment problems, behavior problems, emotional disturbances, a personality disorder or incipient mental illness.

Child Guidance

Services may include screening programs for early identification of the condition and associated complications; establishment of a treatment regimen; patient education; and self-management skills development assistance which may focus on use of insulin and drugs to control blood sugar levels, blood glucose monitoring, dietary management in different environments (at home, at work, in school, while dining out), menu planning, the role of exercise in relation to food intake, hygienic measures such as foot care and ways to reduce the likelihood of diabetes-related complications which may include heart disease, kidney failure, amputation, nerve damage and blindness. Programs that are staffed by surgeons who have special expertise in the operative, peri-operative and critical care of patients who have pathological conditions within the chest. Included is surgical care of patients who have coronary artery disease; cancers of the lung, esophagus and chest wall; abnormalities of the great vessels and heart valves; congenital anomalies or tumors of the mediastinum; or injuries to the chest. Cardiothoracic surgeons require substantial knowledge of cardio-respiratory physiology and oncology as well as capability in the use of extracorporeal circulation, intra-aortic balloon support, pacemakers, pleural drainage, respiratory support systems, endoscopy and invasive and noninvasive diagnostic techniques.

Orthopedic surgeons provide care for a wide variety of problems that may be present at birth, or develop at any time during the person's lifetime including congenital deformities, trauma, infections, tumors, degenerative conditions, and metabolic disturbances that fall into the category of musculoskeletal abnormalities. Orthopedics may also involve the treatment of secondary muscular problems in patients who suffer from various central or peripheral nervous system lesions such as cerebral palsy, paraplegia or stroke.
