Program offers a full spectrum of classes covering pregnancy through parenting teens and is taught by certified childbirth educators. Learn what to expect during pregnancy and labor, parenting skills for newborn, young child, or teen, and you'll meet other people experiencing some of the same joys and challenges that go along with being a mom or dad. Mutual support groups whose members are people who have experienced a loss, such as the death of a loved one, divorce or separation. The groups meet in-person, by telephone or via the Internet; are open to anyone who has had a loss rather than structured for people with particular types of losses; and focus on helping participants accept their loss, express their grief, move through the bereavement process and put their lives back together.

General Bereavement and Grief Support Groups

Programs that help pregnant individuals become aware of their alternatives including abortion, evaluate their options, and reach decisions that are appropriate for their individual situations. Counseling is generally also available for significant others, upon request.

Pro-Choice Pregnancy Counseling

Programs that instruct the public in the appropriate techniques for prolonging the lives of victims of heart failure until emergency medical care can be provided. Included may be instruction in full CPR which combines rescue breaths with chest compressions (the best option in some emergencies, including those involving infants and children, drowning victims or people who collapse due to breathing problems) and/or hands only CPR which involves chest compressions only, no mouth to mouth contact. Hands only CPR is used in emergencies where someone suffers sudden cardiac arrest.

CPR Instruction

Programs that offer hearing threshold tests for the purpose of identifying individuals whose ability to perceive sound falls outside the normal range. People who fail the screening test need an in-depth evaluation by an audiologist.

Hearing Screening

Parenting seminars, frequently taught by experienced fathers who bring their own babies to class, that help to prepare expectant fathers for their parenting role. The workshops provide opportunities to discuss a variety of issues with "veteran" dads such as bonding with the baby, balancing work and time spent with the baby, stretching their income, developing a parenting team, supporting the needs of a new mom, dealing with advice and criticism from relatives, and managing stress and health and safety issues; and include opportunities to practice feeding and burping a baby, changing diapers, holding and comforting a baby, playing with a baby, soothing a crying baby and other tasks related to parenting a newborn. Some programs focus on the parenting needs of a particular ethnic group, deal with cultural issues related to fatherhood and may be available in a language other than English.

New Dad Parenting Programs

Programs that provide educational and supportive services that help teens who are or are about to become parents, to prepare them on an emotional and practical level for the impact the newborn will have on their lives and relationships. Initial focus areas include healthy eating for the mother, danger signs in pregnancy, sibling preparation and being ready for labor and delivery, followed by practical information on basic infant care, newborn behaviors, baby supplies, bathing techniques, diapering, breastfeeding and other feeding options, as well as infant and childhood illnesses. Later topics may include walking, talking, toilet training and other aspects of child development, all to help ensure that infants and toddlers are nurtured, live in a safe environment and receive proper health care.

Teen Expectant/New Parent Assistance

Programs that offer classes for parents or for parents and their children that focus on the developmental stages of maturation from infancy through adolescence and the child rearing problems that arise with each stage. Classes may be purely instructional or may include an experiential element in which parents bring their infants or toddlers to class and observe their behavior as an example of the specific material being discussed.

Child Development Classes

Programs that provide information and instruction concerning appropriate techniques for nursing an infant for expectant parents or new mothers.

Breastfeeding Support Programs

Programs that offer classes or other educational experiences which prepare prospective mothers and their birth partners emotionally and physically for the labor and birth process. Topics covered include anatomy and physiology of birth, relaxation and breathing techniques, different types of labors, birthing/delivery options and postpartum care. Also included are programs that prepare other members of the family (grandparents and siblings) for the arrival of a new family member.

Childbirth Education

Mutual support groups whose members are parents who have experienced the loss of a child at any age. The reasons for loss may include miscarriage or stillbirth, or an illness or accident in infancy, during childhood or later in life. The groups meet in-person, by telephone or via the Internet; and focus on helping participants accept their loss, express their grief, move through the bereavement process and put their lives back together. Included are groups for parents who have lost a child to sudden infant death syndrome.

Bereaved Parent Support Groups

Programs that provide emotional support, problem-solving assistance, information and guidance for people who have recently experienced a loss, such as the death of a loved one, divorce or separation. Included are counseling programs for widows and widowers, children who have lost a parent, parents who have lost a child and people who are in other similar situations.

Bereavement and Grief Counseling

Programs that are designed to increase public awareness of the measures that people can take to protect children from preventable injuries and fatalities sustained in and around automobiles. Included are programs that provide information about laws which relate to the use of child passenger safety seats to restrain infants and young children who are riding as passengers in motor vehicles, which stress the importance of child passenger safety measures and/or which make available information about the relative merits of different types of child passenger safety seats; and those that address safety issues such as heat stroke, hypothermia, carbon monoxide poisoning, runaway vehicles, carjacking/abduction, trunk entrapment, self-release from car seat and other problems that may occur when young children are left unattended in a vehicle.

Programs that offer individual or group therapy sessions to assist people who have receptive or expressive language difficulties. Sessions usually focus on concept development, word sequencing (syntax), and word choice (vocabulary) as well as on the development or improvement of listening skills.

Language Therapy

Programs that perform a laboratory analysis of body fluids and tissue to determine the presence of irregularities or to identify unknown substances submitted for analysis.

General Laboratory Tests

Programs that are staffed by specialists who provide comprehensive preventive, diagnostic, and treatment services for individuals who have diseases of or injuries to the feet. Conditions treated may include bacterial and fungal infections, skin and nail disorders, benign and cancerous tumors, congenital and acquired foot deformities and foot problems caused by illnesses such as diabetes, arthritis and cardiovascular diseases. Treatment includes use of surgical procedures, casting or other forms of immobilization and the prescription of corrective devices, oral and locally injected medication and physical therapy. Included are services provided by podiatrists, chiropodists and other foot care specialists. Foot care may also be provided by nurses. Podiatrists are health professional specialists with a Doctor of Podiatric Medicine degree.

Podiatry/Foot Care

Programs that provide for the comprehensive management of the physical, psychological, social, spiritual and existential needs of patients with the objective of helping them achieve the best possible quality of life through relief of suffering, control of symptoms and restoration of functional capacity while remaining sensitive to personal, cultural and religious values, beliefs and practices. The focus of palliative care is on people with incurable, progressive illnesses who are in the early stages of their illness. Palliative care may be provided in a wide variety of health care settings including hospitals, nursing facilities, hospice facilities and the person's own home; and may be coordinated with other services including curative therapies.

Palliative Care

Programs that provide information concerning the basic principles of healthful eating, food handling, food preparation and shopping skills. Included is information about the basic food groups, vitamin and mineral requirements, the relationship of nutrition to the preservation of good health and the prevention of illness, and dietary choices such as vegetarianism.

Nutrition Education

Programs that offer the specialty in which all modalities of radiant energy are used for the detection of abnormalities throughout the body, often following the ingestion or injection of a radioactive or radiopaque substance that functions as a contrast medium. This includes but is not limited to imaging techniques and methodologies utilizing radiation emitted by x-ray tubes, radionuclides, thermagraphic devices, ultrasonic devices and radio-frequency electromagnetic radiation emitted by atoms.

Diagnostic Imaging/Radiology

Health care facilities that are licensed to operate 24 hours per day and offer diagnostic and treatment services as well as emergency and critical care services for people who have any of a variety of illnesses or injuries which require immediate, short-term intervention.

General Acute Care Hospitals

Programs that establish the nature and extent of an individual's language and/or speech deficits in order to devise an appropriate treatment plan.

Speech and Language Evaluations

Programs that are staffed by specialists who have expertise in using operative procedures to alleviate problems when a cure is unlikely using medication alone. General surgery can be used for routine procedures performed in a physician’s office, such as a vasectomy, or for more complicated operations requiring a medical team in a hospital setting such as laparoscopic cholecystectomy (removal of the gallbladder). Areas of the body treated by general surgery include the stomach, liver, intestines, appendix, breasts, thyroid gland, salivary glands, some arteries and veins, and the skin.

General Surgery

Hospitals and other health care facilities that provide 24-hour diagnostic and treatment services for people who have acute, life-threatening injuries or severe illnesses.

Emergency Room Care

Programs that are staffed by specialists who provide comprehensive diagnostic and treatment services for individuals who have cancer of any type or other benign or malignant tumors. Medical oncologists decide on and administer chemotherapy for malignancy as well as consult with surgeons and radiotherapists regarding treatment of cancer.

Medical Oncology

Programs that are staffed by specialists who provide comprehensive medical management including preventive, diagnostic and treatment services for individuals who have diseases or other conditions that affect the heart, lungs and blood vessels. Cardiologists manage complex cardiac conditions such as heart attacks and life threatening abnormal heart beat rhythms in settings such as coronary care units of hospitals.

Cardiovascular Medicine

Programs that are staffed by surgeons who have special expertise in the diagnosis, evaluation and surgical treatment of disorders of the central, peripheral and autonomic nervous systems including their supporting structures and vascular supply; and the evaluation and surgical treatment of pathological processes which modify the function or activity of the nervous system including the hypophysis.

Neurosurgery

Programs that establish the nature and extent of an individual's hearing loss in order to devise an appropriate treatment plan. Evaluations may include pure tone and speech audiometry which measure hearing in terms of reception of calibrated test tones or spoken words which are presented at controlled levels of intensity; impedence tests which measure the integrity of the middle ear system and rule out conductive pathology; and auditory brain stem tests which utilize equipment similar to an EKG to measure neurological activity in response to auditory stimuli.

Audiological Evaluations

Programs that are staffed by specialists who have expertise in the diagnosis and treatment or management of medical and surgical conditions affecting the urinary tract. In women, this refers to the kidneys, ureter, urethra, and bladder. In men, this additionally includes the reproductive tract with penis, prostate and testicles. Urologists are trained to deal with prostate infections, obstruction, and cancer; incontinence; urinary tract infections including kidney and bladder infections; kidney stones; urologic cancer; and male impotence and infertility.

Urology

Programs that offer individual or group therapy sessions which focus on the remediation of specific articulation problems in which speech sounds are omitted, replaced by substitute sounds or distorted; voice problems in which pitch, loudness or quality of voice is affected; or stuttering.

Speech Therapy

Programs that provide facilities and/or necessary medical attention for individuals who are ready to give birth.

Delivery/Childbirth

Programs that are staffed by specialists who provide comprehensive preventive, diagnostic and treatment services for people who have diseases and conditions such as abdominal pain, ulcers, diarrhea, cancer or jaundice that affect the digestive system including the stomach, bowels, liver, gallbladder and related organs.
